November 1989: East Germany’s national football team, coached by Eduard Geyer, is preparing for the decisive match in its World Cup qualifying campaign. The golden generation featuring Matthias Sammer, Ulf Kirsten, Andreas Thom and Rico Steinmann needs only a draw to secure a place at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Hardly anyone doubts that they will succeed. But then the Berlin Wall falls—and everything changes.
